Crown of Betrayal: The Sirens Book 1

Corander is half correct. I really do hope some part of me knows what I am doing, as does my aunt, because one wrong step and it could be the death of so much more than just us. It could be the death of all we have claimed as ours.  ~ Princess Verona

“It’s never the daggers you must be careful of, Verona. It’s the cloaks. Daggers will just kill you, but the cloaks will destroy you.”

While I’m a huge fan of Crow’s series The Risen, I had my doubts about whether or not a book about mermaids could compare. I shouldn’t have. Crown of Betrayal takes a long neglected creature of mythology and turns it into an action packed story on par with both her zombie series and everything else that’s currently trending. I realize these are considered Young Adult, but this semi-old adult can’t get enough of Crow’s writings.

This story had every element a good story should have. An intriguing plot, attention to detail, but best of all fleshed out, well-written and well-rounded character development. There’s an abundance of expressive scenes that really make you feel like you are right there in the story, and that’s something I really look for in a good book.

This is her debut into YA, she’s the queen of the Zombies, but it was interesting to see how she’d craft her dark style into a good for a younger generation. I have to be the first to say, she KILLED it. This novel presented me more than I was even expecting.

If you buy one YA book this month, or next, this should be the one you buy. It’s got everything those big name YA books have, but it also has a deeper level of heart, creativity, and wonderful style!

Like a Shakespearean plot, Verona is thrown into what seems like an insurmountable situation and she must wake up to a whole new world of reality. This is truly a stunning work, and one that I found to be more than just a fantasy book. It may be a mermaid fantasy series, but it feels like something so much bigger and elaborate. It’s a good start to what will most likely be a long running series. Crow does well here, and I’m a fan, I love it.
